This blog tour is featuring a variety of mash-ups and hacks tutorials that can be done with Sofilantjes patterns. I will be taking the Domi Sweat Pants (3/4 length) and adding knee patches.
The girls’ grandma lives on an acreage outside of town, where there is plenty of room to run and play outdoors. Our summers can get quite hot, but grandma still prefers the girls wear clothes that cover their knees so they don’t scrape them on the driveway. I wanted to make big sister some joggers specifically for grandma’s house, but I didn’t want anybody to feel bad if they got holes in the knees. The Domi 3/4 length sweatpants by Sofilantjes are the perfect length joggers for warm weather, and I just added dual-layer knee patches to absorb some of the rough play, and hopefully extend the life of the pants.
Since they are capri-length I did half-circle knee patches. I omitted the pockets so there wouldn’t be too much going on, but I’m sure you can get away with them in the larger sizes. I couldn’t find anything like this on Pinterest, but I went for it, and I think they look pretty cool! And who doesn’t like chocolate?
So it’s really easy to add knee patches. Here’s how:
1. Make a template for the patch
I just free-handed a half circle on medical tracing paper right on top of the front leg fabric so I could get the size I wanted. I folded the pattern in half to make sure it was symmetrical, and then added a seam allowance around the entire thing. You would make a complete oval for full length pants.
2. Cut and sew the patches together
Cut four pieces of fabric using your template and sew them together right sides facing around the curved edge, leaving the flat edge open for turning. If you are doing an oval, just leave a 1″-2″ section for turning. Turn right side out. There is no need to close the opening on the half circle since it will get sewn into the seam, but you will need to if doing the oval.
3. Interface and sew to pants leg
Cut 2 pieces of interfacing slightly larger than your patches. Center the interfacing on the wrong side of the pants leg at the bottom and the patch on the right side, using clips or pins to hold in place.
Sew around the curved edge of the patch (or the entire edge if making an oval) with a zig-zag or appliqué stitch. Then simply construct your pants as instructed.
Now you have custom handmade play clothes that can withstand a bit of a beating.
Another modification I made to the pants was to make a faux drawstring. The CPSC warning against drawstrings is geared toward children’s tops, but since the pants have an elastic waistband I decided to go for fake drawstrings anyway. Then they won’t get pulled out.
This is what the waistband looked like before I attached it. I cut my shoe laces to the size I wanted (about 7″) and sewed them with a layer of interfacing to the wrong side of the waistband opposite the grommets. So when the waistband is folded the drawstrings start close to the grommets, but just off to the side so you don’t see them.
To complete the outfit I personalized the shirt for Grandma’s house. I just got a Silhouette Cameo and this was my first project! I still have a lot to learn. Apparently I didn’t press this enough so it’s pealing already. I will have to try again…or does anybody know, can I just re-press it to seal it better?
Thanks for following along, now it’s time for some prizes!
