Look who’s ready for school!

I’m excited to be a part of this Back to School blog tour with Simple Life Pattern company. Today’s theme is picture perfect – what to wear for school picture day. SLPco has loads of patterns that would be great for picture day. I used the following criteria to make my fabric and pattern choices:

  • What colors and prints will look good with any background?  I chose solid over print since you never know what those backgrounds will look like!
  • Which patterns have a wow factor right at the neckline since that is all that might show?
  • What do we need that can be used any other day of school too?

With those criteria in mind I chose Jane. Jane is a dress or romper that can be made sleeveless or with short sleeves. I made two super-easy mods since I wanted tunic length and long sleeves. I was trying to replicate a Carter’s pullover denim top that she wore over 50% of the time last year. This one was going to be even better though because of Jane’s signature ruffle button placket. I love to make leggings out of my cotton lycra prints and this top will go with ever single one of them, which is why I did the skirt in denim as well and also why I made a tunic length. The ruffled placket will simply take it to the next level.

Since Jane already comes with cap sleeves that go all the way around the armscye, making them long doesn’t really take any drafting skills. I just lengthened the lines all the way down. As a check I grabbed another woven sleeve pattern (I think it was the Taylor sleeve, which is not at all similar) and simply used it to verify the length to extend the lines to and the width of the wrist opening. Then when I did the 1/2″ hem I left a small opening to thread 1/4″ elastic through to give them the look I was going for.

I also made this a size too big for her since I’m hoping it will last all fall and winter and I’m anticipating a growth spurt. So right now it fits her a little big.

The denim I used was from JoAnn’s. It’s a nice soft 5 oz. denim perfect for tops like this. I initially had the mustard AGF print leggings set aside for this outfit (you can see a glimpse of them in the school picture collage). But I wasn’t feeling it, so in the middle of our photo shoot before we transitioned outside I sat down and whipped up these leggings in some leftover metallic knit that I had from Style Maker fabrics.

We both loved the outcome! And though you won’t see the leggings in individual school pictures, they may show in class pictures. Plus a girl has to feel put together right?

Granted, the hat or headband may or may not be dress-code friendly – I don’t know, but the rest of the outfit definitely is!
